Are you ready to take the plunge! and venture off road in your treasured 4x4? Whether you want to go Greenlaning, visit a purpose built off road site or even enter one of the various Competitive events, remember your 4x4 will be getting used for what it was designed for,often in demanding terrain, so checking the following will help prevent those nasty surprises, that will end your fun early. Look at getting some basic recovery gear! We are a friendly helpful club, and don't mind helping new members that are starting out. But keep turning up with an unreliable 4x4 and no equipment and you'll soon find yourself far from popular!
BASIC'S
1.If it's leaking, smoking or making that odd noise FIX IT!
2.Check engine oil and coolant level
3.Check windscreen wipers and washers
4.Check brake fluid level
5.Check lights
6.Check tyre condition and pressures DON'T FORGET THE SPARE!
7. Insurance, make sure you are covered for off road use
8. Breakdown cover, for that peace of mind
BASIC GEAR (minimum)
1.Heavy duty tow rope or recovery strap, the higher the rating the better
2.Good strong recovery points front and rear, ensure they are attached securely
3.'D' Shackles
4.Shovel or Spade DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT ONE!
5.Hi-lift jack, can be used for self recovery,
6.Good All terrain or Mud terrain tyres
7.First aid kit
8.CB, mobile phones rarely work in remote places
ALWAYS
Drive sensibly in the countryside
Stick to the defined Byway or track
Be courteous to all other countryside users
Avoid damage to unsurfaced roads, £20,000 fines can be imposed for deliberate damage!
